I’m so excited to present my latest space mission patch!
This drawing illustrates the second Molecular Muscle Experiment, which sends C. elegans worms into space for research on muscle loss and aging. The experiment focuses on how spaceflight affects the decrease in muscle mass, and whether drugs like hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can improve neuromuscular and mitochondrial health – illustrated by the H2S, neurons and mitochondria in the drawing. This study will help us better understand muscle loss in zero gravity, as well as muscular and mitochondrial diseases on earth. The worms launched this week on the Space X Dragon capsule and are on the way to the International Space Station as we speak!

It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with Dr Nate Szewczyk, Dr Tim Etheridge, Colleen Deane and the whole MME team, as well as University of Exeter, University of Nottingham, and the UK Space Agency!
